Stop Grading Bell-Ringers: How to Build an AUTO-Grading Warm-Up in Seconds: Click Here to try it for yourself
Let’s be real: we all love a good "This Day in History" hook, but nobody has the time to manually grade 150 short-answer reflections every single morning. You want the engagement of a deep-thinking prompt without the mountain of digital paperwork.
What if your warm-up didn't just start the class, but actually graded itself while you were taking attendance?
By using a custom Gemini Gem and a tiny bit of "magic" code, you can turn a historical mystery into a fully automated, auto-graded Google Form. It’s about making teaching easier one tech tool at a time.
The Workflow: From AI Prompt to Auto-Graded Points
Here is the step-by-step breakdown of how to get this running in your classroom before the first bell rings.
Step 1: Fire up the "This Day in History" Gem
Open your Gem and let it generate today's mystery. It will give you the historical event and a specific writing prompt designed to make students use their words and think critically.
Step 2: Grab the JavaScript "Magic"
The Gem doesn't just give you text; it can provide a specific snippet of JavaScript. This code is the bridge between the AI's brain and your Google Drive.
Step 3: The 60-Second Google Form Setup
This is where the "Auto-Grading" happens. You don't need to be a computer scientist to do this:
Open a New Google Form: Give it a quick name like "Daily History Challenge."
Access the Script Editor: Click the three dots (More) in the top right and select Script editor.
Paste & Save: Delete the placeholder code, paste the JavaScript provided by the Gem, and hit the Save (disk) icon.
Run the Script: Click the Run button. This will automatically populate your form with today's prompt and the correct answer parameters.
Toggle "Make this a Quiz": In the Form settings, ensure "Make this a quiz" is on.
Why Teachers Are Obsessed With This
The script doesn't just look for "right or wrong." It's programmed to scan student responses for key historical terms and evidence-based phrases. If the student hits the criteria, they get the points instantly.
You get a spreadsheet full of data, the students get instant feedback, and you get to actually finish your coffee while it's still hot.
