Why I Replaced My Unit Test with an AI Hiring Manager (And How You Can Too)
Let’s be real for a second we’ve all handed out an end-of-unit test and watched our students’ eyes glaze over. After 11 years in the classroom, I’m constantly looking for ways to make assessments feel less like a chore and more like an actual experience.
Through EdTech60, I'm always testing out new ways to bring artificial intelligence into the mix, and recently, I decided to throw the standard multiple-choice test completely out the window. I wanted my students to prove their mastery not by filling in bubbles, but by surviving a rigorous job interview with an AI Hiring Manager.
And honestly? It completely changed the energy in the room.
If you are looking for a way to test research skills, vocabulary application, and critical thinking all at once, you have to try this. It’s a 3-4 day project-based assessment where students apply for a real-world job that requires expert knowledge of whatever topic you are currently teaching.
Here is exactly how I break it down in my classroom and how you can steal it for yours.
Day 1: The Hook and The Hustle (Research Phase)
You have to sell this. I start by reading a "Hype Script" to the class, warning them that this AI Hiring Manager is programmed to look for experts and will absolutely push back if they give a weak answer. The goal is to survive a five-question interview and seamlessly weave 8 specific vocabulary words into the conversation.
Once they are hooked, Day 1 is all about research.
The Task: Students pick a specific career related to our topic, define their 8 target vocabulary words, and figure out how those terms apply to the actual industry.
The Case Study: They also have to research real historical events or projects where professionals either succeeded brilliantly or failed terribly because of their understanding of the topic.
Day 2: Strategy and "The Pivot" (Pre-Chat Prep)
Nobody walks into an interview completely blind, so Day 2 is about anticipating the AI's moves.
The Pitch: Students draft a 3-4 sentence professional introduction proving why their knowledge makes them the best candidate.
The Pivot Strategy: This is my favorite part. I explicitly teach them that the AI will ask a curveball. They have to draft a "go-to" filler sentence to buy time and smoothly transition back to a concept they actually know. In real life, nobody knows everything, and the most impressive candidates are the ones who don't panic under pressure.
Practice: I have them pair up and practice their elevator pitches and pivot strategies out loud with each other before facing the AI.
Day 3: Game Time (The Live Interview)
This is where the magic happens. The students log in, fire up the custom AI I built for this
While they chat, they are actively checking off their vocabulary words on their dossiers as they successfully use them. At the end of the chat, the AI evaluates their answers and delivers a final verdict: HIRED or NOT HIRED. Once it's over, they copy and paste their entire transcript into a blank document.
A quick reminder for all my teacher friends: No matter how good the tech is, if teachers don't have a good relationship with their students, it doesn't matter. Make sure you are circulating the room on Day 3, cheering them on, and calming their nerves! They will be feeling the pressure.
Day 4: The Debrief (Where the Real Learning Happens)
This is the most crucial day of the entire project.
If a student gets "NOT HIRED," I make sure they know upfront that this is not a failure; it is simply data. During the debrief, they have to analyze their transcript and figure out exactly why the AI passed on them.
Transcript Audit: Students find their weakest or shortest answer from the live interview and rewrite it with expert-level detail, using at least one vocabulary word they missed.
Teacher Pro-Tip: Grade the reflection, not just the verdict. A student who bombs the interview but writes a highly analytical breakdown of why they failed has demonstrated just as much learning as the kid who got the job easily.
